The Department of Neurosurgery at Xijing Hospital (First Affiliated Hospital of the Air Force Medical University) in Xi'an was established in 1956 by Professor Tu Tongjin, one of the founding fathers of neurosurgery in China, making it one of the earliest neurosurgery departments founded in New China. Publicly recognized as nationally leading in craniocerebral trauma (including combat trauma), cerebrovascular disease, central nervous system tumors and functional disorders, the department serves patients from across China as well as Central Asia, Southeast Asia and beyond.

National Key Discipline & Double First-Class
A National Key Discipline and a key discipline under the national 211 Project, with a post for Distinguished Professors under the Changjiang Scholars Program; also a National Key Clinical Specialty and a national Double First-Class discipline.
PLA Institute of Neurosurgery
Home to the PLA Institute of Neurosurgery, a top-priority discipline of the PLA Medical Research Institutes; a doctoral degree-granting discipline within the clinical medicine postdoctoral mobile station.
Specialist Training Base

A traditional strength of the department, with diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injury, including combat trauma, at the leading domestic level.
Cerebrovascular Surgery & Intervention
Surgical and interventional treatment of cerebral aneurysms, cerebrovascular malformations and occlusive cerebrovascular disease.
Microneurosurgery for CNS Tumors
Microsurgical treatment of skull base tumors, cranial-excranial communicating tumors, meningiomas, gliomas, acoustic neuromas, craniopharyngiomas and pituitary adenomas, including single-nostril transsphenoidal removal of pituitary adenomas without open craniotomy.
Spinal & Intraspinal Tumors
Microneurosurgery for spinal and intraspinal tumors.
Functional Neurosurgery & Neuroendoscopy
Surgical treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm and other functional disorders, with extensive use of neuroendoscopy and microsurgical minimally invasive techniques.

Tu Tongjin — Department Founder
One of the founding fathers of neurosurgery in China; founded the Department of Neurosurgery at Xijing Hospital in 1956.
Zhang Xiang — Professor & Chief Physician
Doctoral supervisor; studied in Austria (1991–1992) with Austrian Ministry of Health practice and visiting-researcher qualifications. Specializes in cranial and spinal tumors, cerebral aneurysms, vascular malformations and trauma, with notable skill in neuroendoscopic single-nostril transsphenoidal removal of pituitary adenomas.
Fei Zhou — Former Director, PLA Institute of Neurosurgery
Professor, Chief Physician and doctoral supervisor; former Director of the PLA Institute of Neurosurgery, Director of Neurosurgery at Xijing Hospital and President of Xijing Brain Hospital, with postdoctoral research in the UK and the USA. Expert in skull base and cranial-excranial communicating tumor microsurgery; received the Wang Zhongcheng Chinese Neurosurgery Physician Academic Award in 2008. Dr. Jiang Xiaofan serves as Deputy Director per public conference reports.
