If you or a loved one is facing a urologic condition — a kidney tumor, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, urinary stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or a complex urethral disease — the Department of Urology at Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is a national centre of excellence.

Xinhua Hospital (established 1958) is a Grade III Level A teaching hospital, famed for pediatrics and its full-spectrum care "from fetus to old age." Urology is a key pillar of the adult comprehensive strength, and it is distinctive for pediatric urologic tumors and nephron-sparing surgery in children.

The Department of Urology is a Key Discipline of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, a Shanghai standardized residency training base and urology subspecialty standardized training base, a Chinese Urological Association "East China Training Center," a "Hua Tuo Project" core-technology training base for urology, and holds the "National Urologic Oncology MDT Center of Excellence" designation.

At Medora, we help international patients navigate Xinhua's urology team. Here's what you need to know.

Scale and Capacity

The department follows a "specialized disease, specialized care" model with dedicated teams for kidney tumors, prostate tumors, bladder tumors, urinary stones, BPH, andrology/pelvic floor, and complex urethral disease.

Key Experts and Teams

Prof. Cui Xingang (崔心刚) is the discipline leader and department director. A postdoctoral fellow, chief physician, professor and doctoral supervisor, he earned his PhD from the Second Military Medical University in 2004. He is Vice Chair of the Youth Committee of the Chinese Urological Association (CUA), Executive Editor of the Chinese Journal of Urology, Deputy Secretary-General of the Endoscopy Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and Vice Chair of the Medical Robotics Committee of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association. He performs 800+ operations a year, maintains a nephron-sparing rate above 80% for kidney tumors, pioneered nephron-sparing surgery in children (youngest 3 years old), and created the "early sequential open blood-flow technique" and "green-light laser-assisted zero-ischemia technique." His results have been cited in the EAU kidney cancer guidelines for four consecutive years.

The team includes (kidney-tumor subspecialty): Zhang Liang (张良), Ye Jianqing (叶剑青), Pan Xiuwu (潘秀武); and Kang Jian (康健), Bai Qiang (白强), Huang Yunteng (黄云腾), Gu Zhengqin (顾正勤), Shen Haibo (沈海波), Yu Yongjiang (虞永江), Sheng Xujun (盛旭俊), Ye Min (叶敏), Li Chao (李超), Qi Jun (齐隽), Cao Jianwei (曹建伟), Kong Liang (孔良), Gan Sishun (干思舜).

Core Strengths

1. Personalized Precision Nephron-Sparing Surgery

"Saving your kidney" is a signature of the department. Prof. Cui Xingang is one of China's leading experts, using the "2+1" suture method and the sequential open blood-flow technique; he authored the kidney-cancer nephron-sparing chapter of Wu Jieping's Urology. He once removed 10 tumors from a solitary kidney in a single procedure, sparing the patient from dialysis. The team performs 300–400 kidney-tumor operations a year with a nephron-sparing rate above 80%, has among the highest robotic kidney-cancer volumes in Shanghai, and extends this expertise to children as young as 3 years old.

2. Da Vinci Robotic Surgery and Comprehensive Prostate Cancer Treatment

The latest-generation Da Vinci robot supports single-port nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy, cryotherapy and brachytherapy. Single-port robotic radical prostatectomy requires only a 3 cm incision, and the post-prostatectomy incontinence rate is reduced to below 2%.

3. Bladder-Preserving Comprehensive Treatment of Bladder Cancer

One of the first units in Shanghai to perform orthotopic neobladder surgery; en-bloc resection of early bladder cancer; bladder-preserving treatment of muscle-invasive disease; robotic radical cystectomy; single-position heminephroureterectomy.

4. Minimally Invasive Urinary Stone Treatment

Flexible/rigid ureteroscopes, EMS lithotripsy, and UMP and SMP systems; among the top in Shanghai for annual stone-surgery volume and stone-free rate.

5. Minimally Invasive BPH Surgery (Ancient Tradition of Strength)

Holmium, thulium and green-light lasers, balloon dilation, REZUM water-vapor thermal therapy; good preservation of sexual function.

6. Andrology and Pelvic-Floor Disorders

Microsurgical varicocelectomy, pelvic-floor rehabilitation, sling procedures for urinary incontinence, distinctive surgery for concealed penis.

7. Complex Urethral Disease

Free-tissue substitution reconstruction (lingual mucosa), pedicled skin-flap reconstruction, staged penile transposition urethroplasty, robot-assisted bladder-neck Y-V plasty, minimally invasive repair of complex urinary fistulas, penile prostheses and artificial urinary sphincters.

8. MDT Management

An MDT clinic tailors radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy for advanced prostate, kidney and bladder cancers.
