It is a hospital directly affiliated with and supervised by the National Health Commission of China. Founded in 1835 (originally the "Ophthalmic Hospital" at the Thirteen Factories in Guangzhou), it is China's first Western-medicine hospital and the birthplace of Western medicine and Western medical education in China, with a history of 190 years. The great revolutionary pioneer Dr. Sun Yat-sen studied medicine and carried out revolutionary activities here under the name "Yat-sen." Its president is Prof. Song Erwei, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
