The hospital traces its roots to the "Bethel Hospital," founded in 1920. It was renamed Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital in 1952, became an affiliated hospital of Shanghai Second Medical University in 1964, and adopted its current name in 2005. The Department of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery was established in early 2012 as a new specialty spun off from Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
