About the Hospital
The Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University, also known as the Shanghai Red House Hospital, was the first specialized obstetrics and gynecology hospital in China and the first institution in Shanghai to apply laparoscopy and hysteroscopy in gynecologic practice. Its predecessor, the "West Gate Women and Children's Hospital," was founded in 1884; it was rated a Grade 3A (tertiary, top-tier) hospital in 1995 and adopted its current name in 2002. Today it is a Grade 3A specialized teaching hospital integrating clinical care, teaching and research. Professor Wang Shuzhen, a former president of the hospital, was one of the founders of obstetrics and gynecology in China.

Core Strengths and Signature Techniques
1. Disease-specific clinical groups Dedicated groups for ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, cervical cancer and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia deliver comprehensive, integrated care across gynecologic tumors.
2. Fertility-preserving treatment For young patients with gynecologic tumors, the department offers fertility-preserving surgery and medical therapy for early-stage endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian tumors and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia — balancing cancer treatment with reproductive needs.
3. Minimally invasive surgery Minimally invasive approaches for early-stage gynecologic tumors include robotic surgery, 3D laparoscopic surgery and single-port laparoscopic surgery.
4. Standardized radical and staging surgery The department performs radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer, staging surgery for endometrial cancer, radical surgery for vulvar and vaginal cancer, and staging or tumor-debulking surgery for ovarian cancer.
5. Multidisciplinary surgery for advanced and recurrent tumors For advanced and recurrent tumors, multidisciplinary combined surgery is offered, including pelvic exenteration and secondary/multiple tumor debulking.
6. Comprehensive treatment and genetic counseling Chemotherapy, targeted therapy and other modalities are used for standardized, effective adjuvant treatment of post-operative and recurrent cases, with particular expertise in high-risk gestational trophoblastic neoplasia and drug-sensitivity screening and treatment for recurrent ovarian cancer. The department also provides genetic counseling for ovarian, endometrial and other gynecologic tumors.
7. Leadership in quality-control standards In 2019, Professor Hua Keqin of the gynecologic oncology department led the development of the first batch of Yangtze River Delta Quality-Control Standards for Single Gynecologic Diseases, covering the three major gynecologic malignancies (cervical, ovarian and endometrial cancer), and contributed to the national quality-control standards for cervical cancer.
